How hard is Fort Worth's water, actually?

What a softener actually does
A water softener is a tank of resin beads. Water flows through, and the resin swaps the calcium and magnesium in the water for sodium (or potassium, in some systems). The result: soft water throughout your house. The system periodically "regenerates" itself by flushing the accumulated calcium and magnesium down the drain and reloading the resin with salt from the brine tank. This regeneration typically happens overnight and uses about 40–80 gallons of water per cycle.
What it will and won't fix
Softening WILL fix:
- Scale buildup on fixtures, faucets, showerheads
- Dry skin and hair from showers
- Soap and detergent usage (you'll use 30–50% less)
- Dishwasher spotting
- Water heater sediment (extends heater life by years)
- Coffee maker and appliance scaling
Softening WON'T fix:
- Chlorine taste or smell (need a carbon filter for that)
- Bacteria or contamination (need a whole-house filter or RO system)
- Water pressure problems caused by anything other than scale buildup in the pipes
- The sodium content — softened water has slightly more sodium (usually not enough to matter but people on very strict low-sodium diets may want to add a drinking-water bypass)

Total 10-year cost: roughly $2,500–$5,500 depending on which unit and how much salt you burn through. Compare to the amount you spend on descaling, extra soap, replacing scale-damaged appliances, and premature water heater replacement — often the softener pays for itself over that horizon.
Salt-based vs. salt-free — the real story
Salt-based softeners (the traditional kind) actually remove calcium and magnesium and replace them with sodium. They genuinely soften the water — your soap will lather, your fixtures will stay clean, your skin will feel different.
"Salt-free" systems (often marketed as conditioners or descalers) don't actually remove the minerals — they change the crystal structure of the calcium so it's less likely to stick to surfaces. They can reduce scale buildup somewhat but they don't make the water "soft" in any meaningful sense. Marketing sometimes implies they're equivalent to real softeners; they're not. If your primary goal is scale prevention on plumbing surfaces, they can be a reasonable compromise. If you want soft skin, better lather, spot-free dishes, extended appliance life — salt-based is the honest answer.
