Backflow Testing in Fort Worth — What It Is, Who Needs It, and How to Stay Compliant

Why backflow testing exists

Backflow testing protects the drinking water in your city. Under normal conditions, water flows one direction — from the city main into your building. But when pressure drops in the main (a fire hydrant opens, a water-main break, a big draw somewhere on the line), water can briefly flow the other way — from your building back into the public supply. If your building has connections to irrigation lines, boilers, chemical injectors, or even a garden hose sitting in a bucket of soapy water, that contamination can end up in someone else's tap. So Fort Worth Water — like every U.S. water utility — requires that any property with a "cross-connection" (a place where non-drinking water could get pulled back into the drinking system) install a backflow preventer, and that the preventer be tested every year to prove it still works.

Who has to do it in Fort Worth

Not every home needs it. Backflow testing is required if your property has any of the following:

  • An irrigation system with a dedicated backflow preventer (almost always required — irrigation systems can pull water back that's been sitting in the ground)
  • A fire sprinkler system (all commercial fire systems require it; some residential sprinkler systems do too)
  • A commercial building — restaurants, retail, offices, warehouses, industrial
  • Any property with a boiler, chemical injector, or connection between drinking water and a non-drinking water source (pools with autofill, medical or lab equipment, some coffee machines in restaurants)
  • Some residential homes with specific installations — check with Fort Worth Water if you're not sure

If you got a letter from Fort Worth Water reminding you about backflow testing, that's how you know you're required. Ignoring the letter has real consequences (see below).

What happens during the test

A certified backflow tester (that's us — Texas RMP-16431 is authorized to perform backflow testing) arrives with a calibrated test kit. The test itself takes 5 to 15 minutes per device:

  1. We isolate the backflow preventer from the water supply
  2. Attach the test kit to the test cocks on the device
  3. Run through a specific pressure sequence that verifies the check valves inside are holding correctly
  4. Record the readings on the official form
  5. Submit the report to Fort Worth Water (or your specific city) — usually electronically, sometimes on paper

You get a copy of the report for your records. Fort Worth Water gets one for compliance. Total elapsed time from us arriving to us leaving: usually 20–30 minutes for a single device.

Common reasons a backflow preventer fails the test

  • Debris in the check valves. Sand, sediment, or rust flakes stuck under the valve seat prevent full closure. Usually cleanable.
  • Worn rubber seats. Age and water pressure wear them down. Rebuild kits are available for most devices.
  • Relief valve leak. Pressure differential in the middle chamber can't be maintained. Usually a rebuild.
  • Frozen and cracked device. Fort Worth gets hard freezes. If the device wasn't insulated or drained properly, cracks show up in spring.
  • Device installed backwards or on the wrong pipe. Rare but we've seen it — usually catches at the first-ever inspection of a new install.

Most failures can be repaired with a rebuild kit and re-tested the same visit. About 10–15% of failures require replacing the whole device — which is a bigger job and a bigger bill, but rarely surprising.

What it costs

For a single device passing the test: $99 to $175 depending on complexity and location. That covers the technician visit, the test itself, and submitting the paperwork to Fort Worth Water.

If the device fails and needs a rebuild: usually another $150–$300 for parts and labor, plus a re-test.

If the device needs full replacement: $400–$1,200 depending on size and type.

For properties with multiple devices (larger commercial buildings, multi-tenant complexes): we quote per device and can do them all in a single visit to save you money.

What happens if you skip testing

Fort Worth Water tracks required backflow tests. Here's what happens if yours goes past due:

  1. Notice letter. Usually 30 days after the test was due.
  2. Second notice. Another 30 days later, sometimes with a fine attached (typically $50–$200).
  3. Water service shutoff notice. After that, they can turn off your water. This is real — we've had commercial clients call us in a panic on a Friday afternoon because their water is scheduled to be turned off Monday.
  4. Reconnect fee. If they do shut you off, restoring service requires bringing the backflow into compliance AND paying reconnection fees.

None of this is worth the $100–$175 you'd save skipping the annual test. Get on a schedule and stay compliant.

Do I need backflow testing on a residential home?
Only if you have a specific cross-connection: an irrigation system, a residential fire sprinkler system, a boiler, or something similar. If you're not sure whether your home requires testing, look for a letter from Fort Worth Water — they'll tell you. If you never got a letter and don't have irrigation or fire sprinklers, you probably don't need it.
